For females: Vaginal discharge or secretions can interfere with the test, so cleansing the external genitalia from front to back is crucial before collection.
For males: Cleansing the urethral opening area before collection is recommended to prevent contamination.
Contamination: Using the “”clean-catch”” method is the most common way to minimize contamination from penile/vaginal microbiota.
Detergents: Some sources advise against collecting urine for ketone testing from a urine collection cup if there is any residue of detergent left in the cup.
The patient should be instructed to void a small amount of urine into the toilet first.
The “”mid-stream”” of the urine should then be collected into the container.
The container lid should be replaced firmly on the container.
The initial urine from the first void of the day is often preferred as it is more concentrated
Medications and treatments do not need to be stopped unless the doctor instructs otherwise.
