Source of specimen is required
Order AFBBLX for acid fast bacilli culture of blood and bone marrow (1-5 mL in a Myco/F Lytic vial)
Urine: First-void early morning urine on each of 3 consecutive days
Sputum: At least 3 consecutive specimens should be collected, at least 8 hours apart. One should be a first-morning specimen
Gastric lavage: Specimens must be neutralized with 100 mg sodium carbonate if transport is delayed more than a few hours
Indicate if mycobacteria other than tuberculosis are suspected Room temperature: Myco/F-Lytic vial. Send to lab ASAP
Refrigerated: body fluid, sputum, bronchial wash, BAL, gastric aspirate/lavage, induced sputum, urine, stool, tissue or wound swab. Send to lab ASAP
