Nasopharyngeal swab
Specimen in M4 or UTM,
Poor quality sputum (more than 10 epithelial cells per low power field),
Dry specimen,
Multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hours),
Non-sterile or leaking container,
Frozen

Anaerobic culture performed by request only on properly collected bronchoscopy specimens (protected brush) and sinus aspirates
Requests for new collection will be made if sputum shows an excessive amount of epithelial cells on Gram stain
If time to lab will be greater than 4 hours, refrigerate sample

Gram stain within 24 hours of receipt in lab
Preliminary within 24 hours of receipt in lab
Final, 2-3 days after receipt in lab (if no growth)
Positive cultures are reported when detected
