The FSP test has been used primarily to assess disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Because of its greater specificity, the D-dimer test has largely replaced the FSP test for DIC assessment. However, the FSP test is still useful in the diagnosis and evaluation of primary fibrinolysis in which the D-dimer test is negative but the FSP test is positive.
