After collection, insert the swab into the VTM/UTM tube and break the shaft at the scored breakpoint to fit securely.
Ensure the cap is tightly closed, then label the tube with patient name, date of birth, collection date/time, and collector’s initials.
Store and transport at 2–8°C if testing will occur within 72 hours. For longer storage, freeze at –70°C.
Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles, as this can degrade viral RNA.

Interference:
Improper specimen storage or prolonged exposure to room temperature may cause viral degradation.
Contamination with blood, mucus, or other biological materials may inhibit PCR amplification.
Use of non-approved swab materials (cotton, wooden shaft, or calcium alginate) may affect specimen integrity.
Antiviral therapy administered before collection may reduce detectable viral load.
Miscellaneous Instructions to Collector:
Collect the nasopharyngeal swab prior to initiating antiviral or antibiotic therapy, if possible.
Use appropriate PPE and follow infection control procedures during collection.
Verify that the VTM/UTM is within its expiration date before use.
Ensure accurate specimen labeling and timely transport to the laboratory.
Document collection time accurately to assist in result interpretation.
