Labeling: Vials must be labeled with the patient’s full name, date of birth, and the date and time of collection.
Storage/Transport Temperature: For stool specimens collected in the proper preservative (Total-Fix, Ecofix, etc.), the sample is typically stable and should be transported at room temperature (Ambient).
Crucial Note: Unpreserved stool specimens are usually unacceptable or must be handled under strict, immediate refrigeration/freezing, which is why a preservative kit is preferred.

Interference:
Formed stool is not ideal and may reduce PCR sensitivity.
Contamination with urine, water, or disinfectants can interfere with amplification.
Preservatives such as formalin or SAF will inhibit PCR.
Delayed transport at room temperature may reduce nucleic acid integrity.
Miscellaneous Instructions to Collector:
Use appropriate PPE and follow standard precautions during stool collection.
Collect an adequate sample (5–10 grams or 5 mL) without overfilling the container.
Ensure the container is properly sealed, labeled, and transported promptly.
Document the collection date and time in the requisition or LIS for traceability.
Advise the laboratory if the specimen will exceed recommended transport times.
