Interferences

Contamination: Clean-Catch technique is essential. Vaginal discharge or menstrual blood can cause a false-positive protein result.

Storage: Delayed analysis (over 2 hours at room temperature) can alter urine pH and cause false-positive protein results.

Physiology: Strenuous exercise or an acute illness (like a UTI) can cause temporary, or transient, proteinuria. This should be noted on the requisition.

Medications: Recent use of certain antibiotics or radiology contrast dyes can interfere with results; document all medications.

Misc Instructions

Cleanse: Wash hands. Wipe the genital area with an antiseptic towelette (front to back for females; tip for males).

Void First: Start urinating into the toilet to clear the urethra.

Collect Midstream: Place the container into the stream and collect 1–2 ounces (30–60 mL) of urine.

Finish: Finish voiding into the toilet.

Seal & Label: Securely seal the container and label it with the patient’s name, DOB, date, and exact time of collection.
