Urine
Specification After Draw (Handling and Storage)
Proper handling is crucial for accurate results.
Volume: Collect at least 1-2 ounces (30-60 mL) of urine.
Transport/Storage Temperature:
*Room Temperature: Stable for 1-7 days, depending on the lab’s protocol and ambient temperature.
*Refrigerated (2-8°C): Stable for up to 7-14 days. This is the preferred method if the sample cannot be analyzed immediately.
*Frozen (-20°C or colder): Stable for long-term storage (e.g., 6 months at -80°C), but storage at -20°C for extended periods can result in a significant loss of albumin.
Processing Delay: Prompt refrigeration or analysis is ideal. If delays are unavoidable, using a preservative and keeping the sample cool can extend stability.

Interference
Several factors can cause temporary elevations or affect the validity of UACR results.
Physiological Factors:
Exercise: Strenuous physical activity prior to collection can cause a temporary increase in albumin levels.
Fever and Inflammation: These can also lead to transient increases in albuminuria.
Gross Hematuria: The presence of a significant amount of blood in the urine can lead to false-positive results for albumin.
Sample Conditions:
Alkaline Urine: May cause false-positive dipstick results.
Acid Preservatives: Specimens collected with acid preservatives are not acceptable.
Diet/Medications:
High Protein Diet: A high-protein meal shortly before the test may temporarily elevate the UACR.
Certain Medications: Some medicines may affect creatinine or albumin levels; the healthcare provider should be informed of all current medications.
Miscellaneous Instruction to Collector
Specimen Type: A “”spot”” urine sample (especially the first-morning void) is the recommended specimen type. A 24-hour collection is an alternative method.
Clean Catch Method: Instruct the patient to use the clean-catch method to avoid contamination: wash hands, clean the genital area with a wipe, urinate into the toilet briefly, then collect the middle portion of the urine in the container, and finish voiding in the toilet.
Labeling: Ensure the container is properly sealed and labeled with the patient’s information and the collection specifics (e.g., “”first morning void””, “”random””, or total volume and duration if timed).
Integrity: Ensure the container cap is secured tightly to prevent leakage during transport. The collector must ensure the security of the specimen and integrity of the collection process.
