Specimen Preparation

Specification After Draw (Handling and Storage)

Seal Tightly: The cap on the sample collection tube must be twisted/snapped shut tightly to prevent leakage; do not re-open it.

Mix (if applicable): Some kits with liquid preservatives require vigorous shaking of the tube to mix the specimen with the transport liquid.

Labeling: The container and/or outer envelope must be labeled with the patient’s full name, date of birth, and the date and time of collection.

Storage Temperature: Store the sample at room temperature or refrigerated, depending on specific kit instructions, but do not freeze.

Time Limit: The sample should be returned to the laboratory as soon as possible, typically within 48 hours to 7 days of collection (check specific kit instructions).

Interferences

Interference

Blood: Do not collect the sample during a menstrual period or if there is visible bleeding from hemorrhoids, a urinary tract infection, or other obvious sources of blood.

Toilet Water/Urine: Stool must not be mixed with toilet water or urine. Use a collection paper or a clean, dry container (like a disposable tub or plastic wrap) to catch the stool before sampling.

Chemicals: Avoid using toilet bowl cleaners before collection, and protect the sample from heat, light, and volatile chemicals (e.g., iodine, ammonia, bleach).

gFOBT (Guaiac-based test) only: For the traditional gFOBT (not the FIT/immunochemical test), certain foods (red meat, raw fruits/vegetables like turnips and horseradish) and medications (aspirin, NSAIDs, steroids, iron preparations, excess vitamin C) can interfere with results and should be avoided for a specified period before testing.

Misc Instructions

Miscellaneous Instruction to Collector

Small Sample Needed: Only a small amount of stool is necessary to cover the grooved tip of the sampling stick; do not scoop a large amount or fill the tube.

Multiple Sites: Collect samples from different areas of the same bowel movement to ensure representative sampling.

Flushable Paper: Use the provided biodegradable collection paper, which can be flushed after use.

Patient Instructions: The collector must ensure the patient reads and follows all kit-specific instructions, as procedures can vary slightly between different test brands.

Repeat Samples: For gFOBT, three samples from three separate bowel movements are typically required; for FIT tests, often only one sample is needed (confirm with the kit’s instructions).
